Remote Code Execution in action (CVE-2019-15107)
Introduction
Exploit a recent vulnerability and hack Webmin, a web-based system configuration tool
Pretty fun and easy challenge, demonstrating how dangerous are RCE vulnerabilities.
Nmap
Let’s start with nmap scan:

nmap -T4 -n -sC -sV -Pn -p- 10.10.204.57
PORT STATE SERVICE VERSION
22/tcp open ssh OpenSSH 7.6p1 Ubuntu 4ubuntu0.3 (Ubuntu Linux; protocol 2.0)
| ssh-hostkey:

10000/tcp open http MiniServ 1.890 (Webmin httpd)
|_http-title: Site doesn't have a title (text/html; Charset=iso-8859-1).

So we have 2 ports open
22/tcp
10000/tcp
which seems to be some MiniServ 1.890 application
Reconnaisance
Let’s visit the webpage, wops, we need to visit https://10.10.204.57:10000/
We can see some login form in here
Oops seems like there is a timeout for too many attempts
Let’s run ffuf
to check for additional LFI vulnerability

OK Seems like we have Local File Inclusion vulnerability as we have some hits
My machine stopped working after the scan so I need to restart it, our new IP is 10.10.109.43
Ok let’s not overcomplicate things, in the nmap
scan we had Webmin 1.890 version so let’s google it and we can already see some exploits available
https://github.com/foxsin34/WebMin-1.890-Exploit-unauthorized-RCE/blob/master/webmin-1.890_exploit.py
Let’s try to use it

We can use metasploit for this, our vulnerability is CVE-2019-15107

Let’s change our shell to interactive shell

python -c 'import pty; pty.spawn("/bin/bash")'
And since we are the root already, we can just cat
the flags
